In the King James Version Bible, the words “pray,” “prayer,” and “prayers” appear a combined total of 456 occurrences, demonstrating that prayer is a central theme throughout Scripture. As it is written, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1).
God commands His people to pray. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things” (Jeremiah 33:3). These verses establish prayer as an act of obedience and reliance upon God.
Prayer is the means by which requests are made known unto God. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6). Through prayer, believers present their needs, concerns, and thanksgiving.
Faith is required in prayer. “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering” (James 1:6). This shows that doubt hinders the effectiveness of prayer.
Scripture teaches the necessity of unwavering belief: “For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord” (James 1:7). Also, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” (Matthew 21:22). These passages establish the importance of faith without doubt.
Prayer is made through Jesus Christ. “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do” (John 14:13). This affirms that Christ is central in prayer.
The Bible states that God hears the righteous. “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry” (Psalm 34:15). This confirms that prayer is heard by God.
Confession is connected to prayer. “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed” (James 5:16). This shows the role of humility in prayer.
Believers are instructed to pray for others. “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions… be made for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1). This supports lifting up others in prayer.
Prayer for others is a responsibility. “God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you” (1 Samuel 12:23). We are thankful for the opportunity to pray on your behalf.
Prayer includes giving thanks. “In every thing give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). This acknowledges God’s goodness.
Prayer is according to God’s will. “If we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” (1 John 5:14). This shows that prayer aligns with His purpose.
Scripture teaches that repentance is necessary and is made known unto God through prayer. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven…” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Repentance involves turning from sin and seeking God with humility. Through Jesus Christ, forgiveness is made available: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9). This establishes that repentance and confession in prayer are essential in restoring fellowship with God.
“Pray one for another” (James 5:16)
